Bus
From Jammu, head to the Jammu Bus Stand, which is centrally located. Look for buses heading to Katra, as this is the town closest to Vaishno Devi. The bus journey will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive at Katra Bus Stand, you can follow the signs to the base of the Vaishno Devi trek.
Auto-rickshaw
After reaching Katra, you can hire an auto-rickshaw from the bus stand to take you to the starting point of the Vaishno Devi trek. This is a short ride, and auto-rickshaws are readily available. Ensure you ask for a ride to 'Banganga' as this is the starting point of your trek.
Trekking
Once you arrive at Banganga, begin your trek to Vaishno Devi. The distance is approximately 13 kilometers and usually takes around 4 to 6 hours to complete, depending on your pace. The path is well-marked, and there are plenty of resting points along the way. Make sure to carry water and snacks, and wear comfortable shoes.
Horse or Palanquin
If you prefer not to walk, there are options to hire horses or palanquins (dandis) at Banganga. The horse ride will take you up to the Bhawan (the main temple area) and is a popular choice for many pilgrims.
Use Vaishno Devi as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
