History of Salt Lake City

From Marshes to Planned Township

The land east of Kolkata was historically characterised by low-lying wetlands, canals and saline water bodies rather than a dense urban settlement. As Kolkata expanded after independence, the state pursued a major reclamation and planning project to create a new township on this terrain. Embankments, drainage works and filled land made residential construction possible, while the plan incorporated broad roads, sector divisions, schools, public institutions and open spaces. The name Salt Lake reflects the area’s former saline landscape, even though the township that emerged was a carefully engineered urban environment.

Bidhannagar Takes Shape

The township developed from the late 1950s and 1960s under the state government associated with Bidhan Chandra Roy, whose vision included planned expansion beyond Kolkata’s older built-up districts. It was named Bidhannagar in his honour, although Salt Lake City remained the common English name. Early development concentrated on housing and civic infrastructure, with sectors laid out along a rational road network rather than the irregular pattern found in much of historic Kolkata. Residential plots, institutional campuses and community facilities gradually changed the reclaimed landscape into a substantial eastern suburb.

Landmarks of Recreation and Sport

As Bidhannagar matured, large public and recreational projects helped define its identity. The stadium complex now known as Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, generally called Salt Lake Stadium, became one of the city’s principal venues for football and major public events. Central Park provided an important landscape counterpoint to the township’s roads and apartment blocks, while Nicco Park introduced a large-scale amusement destination. These places reinforced Salt Lake’s role as more than a housing scheme: it became a district of sport, leisure, civic activity and planned public space.

The Rise of Sector V

From the 1990s, Sector V developed rapidly into one of Kolkata’s leading information-technology and business districts. Office buildings, technology companies, educational institutions, restaurants and transport demand brought a new working population and a more commercial pace to the eastern side of Salt Lake. This growth changed the relationship between the older residential sectors and the emerging employment zone, while also intensifying pressure on roads, drainage and public transport. The metro’s extension through Salt Lake further strengthened the township’s connection with the wider Kolkata metropolitan area and its changing economy.
