Dhari Devi Temple: Guardian of Uttarakhand

The Dhari Devi Temple, located in Kalyasaur between Srinagar and Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand, is a sacred site dedicated to Goddess Dhari Devi, a manifestation of Kali. Perched on the Alaknanda River's banks, the temple is not only a place of worship but also a repository of local legends and beliefs.The temple enshrines the upper half of the Goddess Dhari's idol, while the lower half is worshipped at Kalimath Temple, symbolizing the interconnectedness of the divine feminine energy. Legend says that the idol was discovered after a flood swept it against a rock, where villagers then heard a divine voice instructing them to enshrine the idol. The goddess is said to change her appearance throughout the day, appearing as a girl in the morning, a woman in the afternoon, and an old woman in the evening.Dhari Devi is considered the guardian deity of Uttarakhand and protector of the Char Dham Yatra. It is believed that the goddess protects the region from natural disasters. The temple's history is intertwined with tales of divine intervention and protection, reinforcing the faith of devotees. The temple was relocated in 2013 due to the Srinagar Hydel Project, and many believe that the devastating floods that followed were a result of the goddess's displacement. The temple has since been rebuilt at its original location.Visitors can experience the serene atmosphere, participate in prayers, and witness the unique architecture that blends with the natural surroundings. Photography of the idol is strictly prohibited. The temple is open throughout the year, with increased visitors during Navratras.
