Getting there

Walking

From Rudraprayag town, Koteshwar Temple is approximately 3 km away. Start from the main market and head towards the Rudraprayag-Pokhari road, crossing the bridge on the Kedarnath Highway. Follow the Rudraprayag District & Sessions Court Road. A short 300-meter downhill walk will lead you to the temple entrance. There is no cost for walking.

Public Transport

Shared jeeps or buses are available from Rudraprayag to near the temple. From the Rudraprayag bus stand, take a shared jeep or bus towards Pokhari. Alight near the District Court, from where it is a short walk downhill to the temple. The cost for a shared jeep or bus is approximately INR 20-50.

Taxi

Taxis can be hired from Rudraprayag to Koteshwar Temple. The journey takes around 10 minutes. Hire a taxi from Rudraprayag taxi stand or through online services. A short taxi ride to the temple will cost approximately INR 250-400.

Koteshwar Temple, a revered Hindu shrine, graces the banks of the Alaknanda River, approximately 3 km from Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand. This ancient cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and holds significant mythological importance. It is believed that Lord Shiva paused here to meditate on his way to Kedarnath.According to local legends, the temple's history is intertwined with the tale of Bhasmasur, a formidable demon who possessed the power to turn anyone he touched into ashes. To escape the demon, Lord Shiva sought refuge in this cave, where he meditated and prayed to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu then appeared in the form of Mohini and tricked Bhasmasur into touching his own head, leading to the demon's self-destruction.The temple itself is a natural cave adorned with stalactites and stalagmites that are worshipped as Shivalingas. The Alaknanda River flows nearby, adding to the serene and spiritual ambiance of the site. The temple provides a tranquil escape, attracting pilgrims and tourists seeking solace and blessings.Koteshwar Temple is easily accessible by road from Rudraprayag. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to visit is between January and June, and September to December.
