Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Lorentz National Park.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
To reach Lorentz National Park by car, start from Jayapura, the capital of Papua. Drive south on the Trans Papua Highway (also known as Jalan Raya Trans Papua) towards Wamena. The drive is approximately 8 hours (about 300 km). Make sure to stock up on fuel and food supplies in Jayapura as there are limited amenities along the way. As you approach Wamena, look for the signs directing you to Yakapis, where the park's entrance is located. Follow the secondary roads leading into Yakapis, and be prepared for rough terrain as you get closer to the park.
Public Transportation
From Jayapura, take a bus or minivan to Wamena. Buses leave regularly from the main terminal in Jayapura. The journey will take approximately 10-12 hours, costing around IDR 200,000 to IDR 300,000 (about $14-$20). Once you arrive in Wamena, you can hire a local taxi or motorcycle taxi to take you to Yakapis, which is about a 1-hour drive away. Be sure to negotiate the fare upfront, which should be around IDR 100,000 (approximately $7). From Yakapis, you may need to hire a local guide or a 4x4 vehicle to navigate the rugged terrain of Lorentz National Park.
Domestic Flight
Another option is to fly from Jayapura to Wamena. Several airlines operate flights that take about 30-40 minutes. The cost of a one-way ticket is typically around IDR 1,000,000 to IDR 1,500,000 (approximately $70-$100). Upon arrival in Wamena, you can follow the same instructions as mentioned for public transportation to reach Yakapis and then to Lorentz National Park.
Use Lorentz National Park as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
