Discover more about Red Rock Dam

Red Rock Dam, standing tall on the Des Moines River in central Iowa, is more than just a concrete and earth structure; it's a testament to engineering ingenuity and a vibrant recreational destination. Forming Lake Red Rock, the state's largest lake, the dam plays a crucial role in flood control while providing a stunning backdrop for outdoor adventures. Authorized in response to devastating floods in the mid-20th century, construction began in 1960 and was completed in 1969 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam's primary purpose is to manage the Des Moines River's flow, protecting downstream communities from flooding. The dam itself is an impressive sight, comprising an earthfill embankment and a concrete control section, stretching over 5,200 feet in length. Lake Red Rock, created by the dam, has transformed the region into a recreational paradise. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and biking along the lake's shores. The lake and surrounding areas are also a haven for wildlife, attracting birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Several parks surround the lake, offering camping, trails, and interpretive programs. The Red Rock Visitor Center, located near the dam, provides information about the area's natural and cultural history. The construction of the dam and lake also has a poignant side. Several towns, including Red Rock, were submerged under the waters of the new reservoir. While these communities may be gone, their memory lives on in the lake's name and the names of recreation areas around the lake.
