The Buffalo Mural, located at 321 5th St in Sioux City, Iowa, is a striking piece of public art that has quickly become a local landmark. Painted in October 2017 by Argentinian artist Martin Ron, the mural covers one wall of a three-story building on the corner of Fifth and Douglas. Ron, known for his three-dimensional images and street art found across the globe, created this mural as part of the Sioux City Mural Project, which was funded in part by a grant from the Gilchrist Foundation. The mural depicts a three-dimensional bison with two people seated on its head, surrounded by an array of birds. Measuring 1,125 square feet, the artwork makes a bold statement, welcoming people into downtown Sioux City and the Historic Pearl District. The buffalo theme pays homage to the animal's historical importance to the region. The Sioux City Mural Project aimed to make downtown more inviting through eye-catching and thought-provoking public art. Another mural was created as part of the same project on the side of M's on Fourth, featuring historical Sioux City landmarks.
