Discover more about Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, nestled in the Flint Hills of Kansas, offers a glimpse into a disappearing world. This 10,894-acre preserve protects a significant remnant of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem, which once covered 170 million acres of North America. Today, less than 4% remains, making this preserve a vital sanctuary. Established in 1996, the preserve is a unique public-private partnership between the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy. It showcases the rich biodiversity of the prairie, with over 500 plant species, diverse fauna, and iconic grasses like big bluestem and Indian grass. Visitors can explore the landscape on foot via hiking trails that wind through the prairie. Keep an eye out for the bison herd reintroduced in 2009. Beyond its natural beauty, the preserve safeguards cultural history. The restored Spring Hill Ranch, also known as the Z Bar Ranch, features an 1881 limestone mansion, a three-story limestone barn, and the Lower Fox Creek Schoolhouse. These buildings offer a glimpse into the lives of 19th-century ranchers who shaped this landscape. The preserve is open year-round, with the visitor center offering exhibits, an orientation film, and information. Whether you're a birdwatcher, wildflower enthusiast, or history buff, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve offers a memorable and educational experience.
