Discover more about Des Moines Civic Center

The Des Moines Civic Center has been a vital part of Iowa's cultural landscape since its opening on June 10, 1979. Following the closure of the KRNT Theater in 1972, Des Moines lacked a major cultural venue, spurring community leaders to establish a non-profit to build and manage a performing arts center. The Civic Center quickly became known for its excellent acoustics and accessibility. No seat is more than 145 feet from the stage. The Civic Center hosts a wide array of performances, including Broadway touring companies, concerts, ballet, and other special events. It is also the performance home of the Des Moines Symphony. The Civic Center building also houses the 200-seat Stoner Theater, which hosts smaller theatrical shows and lectures. Cowles Commons, a one-square-block space just west of the Civic Center, hosts various events throughout the year and features public art. Located in the heart of downtown Des Moines, the Civic Center is part of the Des Moines Performing Arts, which also operates the Temple Theater and Cowles Commons. The Civic Center is surrounded by a historic district, featuring several public buildings designed in the Beaux-Arts style.
