George Wyth State Park: An Urban Oasis

George Wyth State Park, a sprawling 1,200-acre oasis in Black Hawk County, Iowa, provides a natural escape near the cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls. The park was originally dedicated in 1940 as Josh Higgins Parkway, named after a popular radio character. In 1956, it was renamed George Wyth State Park to honor George Wyth, a well-known Cedar Falls businessman and conservationist. The park's diverse landscape includes woodlands, wetlands, and prairie environments, creating a habitat for a variety of wildlife. Bird watchers can spot over 200 species of birds, and white-tailed deer are frequently seen throughout the year. The park has even been designated as a National Urban Wildlife Sanctuary. George Wyth State Park boasts four lakes: Brinker Lake, a 180-acre lake open for power boating (with no wake before 9 am); George Wyth Lake, a 75-acre no-wake lake with a swimming beach and accessible fishing pier; Fisher Lake, a 40-acre natural lake; and Alice Wyth Lake, a 60-acre lake that only allows electric motors. These lakes provide ample opportunities for fishing, boating, windsurfing, and other water activities. For those who prefer land-based activities, the park offers an extensive trail system. There are several miles of paved, multi-use trails perfect for hiking, biking, skating, and jogging. In addition, there are several miles of soft trails for hiking and exploring. During the winter months, these trails are popular for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking. The park's trail system connects to a larger 100-mile network that links parks, playgrounds, lakes, shopping districts, and neighborhoods in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. The park offers a large campground with electric and non-electric sites, modern showers and restrooms, and a dump station. Some campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, while others can be reserved online. Other amenities include picnic shelters, a day-use lodge, and a playground.
