    From the East Village in Des Moines, the Iowa State Capitol is a short walk west. Head west on E Locust Street, then turn left onto E 9th Street. Walk south for two blocks, then turn right onto E Grand Avenue. The Capitol will be on your left. This walk is free.

  • Public Transport

    The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) provides bus service to the Capitol Complex. Routes 1 and 4 stop near the Iowa State Capitol. A single ride fare is $1.75.

  • Taxi/Ride-share

    Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are readily available in Des Moines. A ride from downtown Des Moines to the Iowa State Capitol will typically cost between $8 and $15, depending on the distance and demand.

Constructed between 1871 and 1886, the Capitol is renowned for its unique five-domed design, the only one of its kind in the country.The building's exterior showcases elaborate columns, cornices, and various types of stone, including limestone and granite from Iowa and neighboring states. The central dome, gilded with 23-karat gold leaf, soars above the city, flanked by four smaller domes. Inside, visitors can admire the intricate woodwork, imported marble, and stunning rotunda. The marble grand staircase is a focal point, and the building features the historical Supreme Court Chamber.Visitors can explore the Capitol through free guided tours, available Monday through Saturday. These tours provide insights into the building's history, architecture, and the functions of Iowa's government. Self-guided tours are also an option during opening hours. The Capitol is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. The building is closed on Sundays and certain holidays.
