Discover more about Terrace Hill Historic Site

Terrace Hill, located in Des Moines, Iowa, stands as a testament to the state's history and architectural grandeur. Completed in 1869, this 18,000-square-foot mansion is a prime example of Victorian Second Empire architecture and serves as both the official residence of the Governor of Iowa and a National Historic Landmark. The story of Terrace Hill begins with Benjamin Franklin Allen, Iowa's first millionaire, who commissioned the home. Designed by Chicago architect William W. Boyington, the mansion boasted modern amenities for its time, including hot and cold running water, indoor restrooms, an elevator, and gaslights. However, Allen's residency was short-lived, and the house was later sold to Frederick Hubbell, whose family occupied it for over 70 years. In 1971, the Hubbell heirs donated Terrace Hill to the State of Iowa. Today, visitors can explore the opulence of Terrace Hill through guided tours, offered from March through December. The tour begins with an introductory video in the Carriage House, followed by a walk through the residence's meticulously preserved rooms. Highlights include the brilliantly colored stained-glass window, the marvelous woodwork, and the worldly collections. Weather permitting, the tour also includes a stroll through the eight acres of historic grounds. Terrace Hill not only offers a glimpse into the past but also serves as a venue for special events and celebrations. The Terrace Hill Partnership, dedicated to preserving and enhancing the property, organizes various programs and events throughout the year.
