Discover more about Martyr Monument

The Martyr Monument, also known as Al-Shaheed Monument, stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance in Baghdad. Inaugurated in 1983, this monument commemorates the Iraqi soldiers who died during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). Designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk and architect Saman Kamal, the monument is now a memorial for all fallen Iraqis in all wars. The monument's design is both striking and symbolic. A 190-meter diameter circular platform sits in the center of an artificial lake. Upon the platform rests a 40-meter tall split turquoise dome, reminiscent of Abbasid-era architecture. The two halves of the dome are offset, with an eternal flame burning in the center. Beneath the monument, visitors can explore a museum, library, gallery, and lecture hall. The surrounding area features parks, playgrounds, walkways, and bridges, creating a space for both remembrance and recreation. Visitors can explore the museum housed within the monument's base, which provides historical context. The monument's serene atmosphere makes it suitable for contemplation, and its unique architecture offers stunning photo opportunities. The Martyr Monument is more than just a landmark; it's a place to reflect on Iraq's past and honor the resilience of its people.
