The Martyr Monument, officially Al-Shaheed Monument, stands as a poignant reminder of Iraq's turbulent past and a tribute to the soldiers who perished during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). Inaugurated in 1983, the monument was designed by Iraqi architect Saman Kamal and sculptor Ismail Fattah al-Turk. It has since become a symbol of remembrance for all Iraqi martyrs.The monument's design is both striking and symbolic. A massive, split turquoise dome dominates the structure, representing the vault of heaven. The two halves are offset, with an eternal flame burning in the center, symbolizing life and death. The outer shells are constructed with a galvanized steel frame and clad in glazed turquoise ceramic tiles. The tiles feature varying shades of turquoise that are used in the holy shrines in Iraq.Beneath the monument lies a museum, library, gallery, and lecture hall, providing context to its construction and the war it commemorates. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the conflict and honor the fallen. The surrounding area features parks, playgrounds, walkways, and a man-made lake, offering a serene space for reflection. The monument is particularly stunning at sunset, when the golden light bathes its surfaces.
