To reach the Ninmah Temple from the center of Babel, head southeast on Al-Mutanabbi Street towards Al-Nasr Street. Continue straight for about 3 kilometers until you reach a roundabout. Take the second exit to stay on Al-Mutanabbi Street. After about 1 kilometer, turn left onto 14th of July Street. Continue for approximately 1.5 kilometers, then turn right onto the road leading to Ninmah Temple. The temple will be on your left. Be aware that parking might be limited near the site.

Dedicated to the goddess Ninmah, also known as Ninhursag, Nintur and Belet-ili, a Sumerian mother goddess of fertility and creation, the temple offers a glimpse into the heart of ancient Babylonian life.Originally built by Nebuchadnezzar II in the Neo-Babylonian period (626-539 BC), the temple was strategically positioned adjacent to the Processional Way and the Ishtar Gate, reflecting its importance within the city. The temple has been rebuilt several times, with each rebuild several meters higher than the previous. Excavations have revealed a simple yet profound layout, featuring a central courtyard surrounded by several rooms, including the chamber of Holy of Holies, where the statue of the goddess was placed. The inner sanctum was exclusively for women, who gathered to perform ritual bathing with water from the holy well and pray for marriage and offspring.In modern times, the temple has undergone several phases of excavation and reconstruction. The first excavation was conducted by the Koldewey Expedition (1899–1914), followed by Iraqi archaeologists who reconstructed it in the 1960s. During Saddam Hussein's Revival of Babylon project in the 1980s, the temple served as a model for temple and house reconstructions. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed ruins, appreciate the architectural ingenuity of the ancient builders, and connect with the spiritual essence of this remarkable site.
