Al-Adhamiya, or Azamiya, is a neighborhood and east-central district within the city of Baghdad, Iraq. As one of Baghdad's nine administrative districts, Al-Adhamiya dates back to the Abbasid period, marking it as one of the capital's oldest areas. The district is named in honor of Abū Ḥanīfah an-Nuʿmān, a highly respected scholar and founder of the Sunni Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence. He is known as al-Imām al-Aʿẓam, meaning "The Great Imam". The Abu Hanifa Mosque, constructed around Abū Ḥanīfah an-Nuʿmān's tomb, is a prominent landmark in the area. Al-Adhamiya is located northwest of Baghdad's city center, on the eastern bank of the Tigris River. The district has been known as an upscale area. Historically, Al-Adhamiya was a mixed Sunni and Shi'ite community, but after the Iraqi civil war (2006–2008), its religious composition became almost entirely Sunni. Despite past conflicts, Al-Adhamiya residents have been recognized for protecting Shi'ite lives during events such as the 2005 Al-Aaimmah bridge stampede. Today, Al-Adhamiya is known for its beautiful nature, pleasant weather, and a peaceful atmosphere. It offers a variety of basic and recreational facilities, including universities, schools, Islamic institutions, restaurants, cafes, markets, and hotels.
