Buratha Mosque: A Baghdad Sanctuary

The Buratha Mosque, located in the Karkh district of Baghdad, is a revered Twelver Shi'ite mosque with a history stretching back to the 7th century. Tradition holds that it was originally a Nestorian Christian monastery. According to the traditional account, a monk named Hebar converted to Islam after meeting Ali ibn Abi Talib, transforming the monastery into a mosque. The mosque's history has seen periods of destruction and restoration. In the 10th century, the Abbasid Caliph Al-Radi ordered its demolition, but it was later rebuilt by the governor of Baghdad after complaints from locals. The mosque has undergone renovations in 1659 and 1933, and in 1955, it was completely rebuilt with local contributions, which included the addition of two new minarets. For Twelver Shi'ites, the Buratha Mosque is a significant holy site due to its association with Ali ibn Abi Talib. It is believed that Ali rested here after a battle with the Khawarij, and that he miraculously revealed a fresh spring by striking a stone in the mosque floor. Some also believe a rock in the mosque is associated with the Virgin Mary, and that Patriarch Abraham and other patriarchs prayed at the site. Visitors are welcome to explore the mosque's prayer halls and courtyards, experiencing its spiritual atmosphere. The surrounding gardens offer a tranquil escape from the city.
