Discover more about سور بغداد القديم

The Old Baghdad Wall, or what remains of it, whispers tales of a city that was once the epicenter of the Islamic world. Constructed in 762 AD during the Abbasid Caliphate, the wall was an integral part of Abu Jaafar al-Mansur's plan to fortify the newly founded capital. The wall, initially made of mud brick, was designed in a circular fashion, giving Baghdad its iconic Round City moniker. A deep moat surrounded the wall, providing an additional layer of defense against potential invaders. The wall featured four main gates, each strategically positioned to connect Baghdad with major regions of the Islamic empire: Bab al-Kufah facing south, Bab al-Basra southeast, Bab al-Sham towards Syria, and Bab al-Khorasan eastward. These gates not only controlled access to the city but also regulated trade and facilitated political and military relations. Over the centuries, the wall underwent several renovations, particularly during the Safavid and Ottoman periods, with defensive towers and modified gates added to enhance its resilience. Despite these efforts, the wall could not withstand the Mongol invasion led by Hulagu Khan in 1258, which resulted in the collapse of the Abbasid Caliphate and the tragic fall of Baghdad. Today, only fragmented sections of the Old Baghdad Wall remain, serving as a poignant reminder of the city's glorious past. Efforts are underway to preserve and restore these remaining sections, recognizing their cultural and historical significance.
