Discover more about Unknown Soldier Monument

The Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Baghdad stands as a powerful symbol of sacrifice and national pride. Constructed between 1979 and 1982, it commemorates the Iraqi soldiers who lost their lives during the Iran-Iraq War. The monument was designed by Italian architect Marcello D'Olivo, based on a concept by Iraqi sculptor Khaled al-Rahal. The monument's centerpiece is a cantilevered dome, inclined at 12 degrees and 42 meters in diameter, symbolizing a traditional shield (dira'a) falling from the grasp of a dying warrior. A spiral tower, reminiscent of the Samarra minaret, stands beside the dome. The monument also features a cube beneath the shield, representing the seven levels of Jannah (Islamic heaven), with red acrylic sheets symbolizing the blood of fallen soldiers. Beneath the monument lies an underground museum, offering insights into Iraq's military history and the stories of those who served. Light filters into the museum through openings connecting it to the cube above. The surrounding area includes landscaped gardens, sculptures, and memorial plaques, providing a tranquil space for reflection.
