Grand Festivities Square ( ساحة الاحتفالات الكبرى Sahat al-Ahtifalat al-Kubra) is Baghdad's premier public celebration space. Constructed in 1986 during Saddam Hussein's regime, the square was intended to commemorate Iraq's victory in the Iran-Iraq War. The location was chosen for its symbolic value, with some Iraqis believing it to be the site where Muslim Arabs defeated the Persians in 636 CE.The square includes a large parade ground and a reviewing pavilion. The pavilion housed a cinema and theater. The famous Victory Arch, also known as the Swords of Qādisīyah, stands over two main entrances to the square. The Monument to the Unknown Soldier is also located nearby.After being closed for 20 years, Grand Festivities Square reopened in June 2023. Al-Mansour Cinema, al-Mansour Theater, and the Fine Art Hall were renovated, with the hope of restoring Baghdad's cultural role. Today, the square hosts festivals and artistic activities, offering visitors a glimpse into Iraqi culture.
