Liberation Square: Baghdad's Beating Heart

Liberation Square, also known as Tahrir Square, is Baghdad's largest and most central square, located in the Al-Rusafa district on the eastern banks of the Tigris River. Originally named Queen Alia Square, it was established in 1937 and renamed to commemorate Iraq's liberation from British colonialism. Over time, it has become a focal point for social and political gatherings, celebrations, and demonstrations, reflecting Iraq's contemporary history and struggles. The square is home to the Freedom Monument (Nasb al-Hurriyah), a major bronze monument designed by Iraqi sculptor Jawad Saleem and architect Rifat Chadirji, which commemorates the 1958 establishment of the Republic of Iraq. The monument features bas-relief figures depicting key events leading up to the republic's creation, consciously referencing ancient Mesopotamian art. The fourteen parts of the monument are intended to be read like a poem in Arabic, from right to left, with historic events leading up to the Iraqi Revolution and the vision of a harmonious future. Al-Umma Garden is situated behind the square and is recognized as one of its most important features. The square is surrounded by important government buildings, commercial properties, and bookstores, including Al-Nahda Library.
