Discover more about Natural History Museum - متحف التاريخ الطبيعي

The Natural History Museum in Basrah is a key scientific, cultural, and tourist center dedicated to showcasing the natural history of the Basrah Governorate. The museum's exhibits cover the diverse environments of the region, including marine and river ecosystems, marshes, plains, and deserts, displaying the variety of flora and fauna that inhabit them. The museum features several exhibition halls filled with mummified specimens of mammals, birds, fish, and other marine animals, as well as insects, rocks, and soils. One of its most famous exhibits was a 12-meter-long whale skeleton collected from the Arabian Gulf, which led to the museum being known locally as the Whale Museum. The displays highlight the importance of conservation and environmental awareness, encouraging visitors to consider their role in preserving the planet. Originally established in 1972, the museum was located on the Shatt al-Arab waterfront in a historic building that once served as the headquarters for an English import-export company. Unfortunately, the museum was vandalized and its collection lost in 2003 during the Iraq War. Despite this setback, efforts have been made to revive the museum and its mission to educate and inspire.
