Peshmarga Park: Erbil's Green Oasis

Peshmarga Park, located in the heart of Erbil, is a sprawling green space offering a refreshing escape from the bustling city life. This park is not just a place to relax; it also serves as a tribute to the brave Peshmerga fighters. Spanning a considerable area, the park is adorned with manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and shaded walking paths that invite visitors to take leisurely strolls or enjoy a peaceful picnic. The park is particularly popular among families, who find its spacious areas perfect for children to play and explore. The well-maintained walking paths are ideal for those looking to jog or walk while enjoying the fresh air. For sports enthusiasts, Peshmarga Park offers basketball courts and other facilities that encourage active lifestyles. Once the base for the Iraqi Army's Fifth Corps during Saddam Hussein's regime, it was a site of torture and killings of Kurdish people. In 1998, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) began cleaning up the area, and the park officially opened to the public on March 14, 2000. Today, the park welcomes thousands of visitors daily, offering a rose garden, wild animals, birds, a health club, swimming pool, gym, two lakes, and a public library.
