Martyr Monument: A Symbol of Iraqi Resilience

The Al-Shaheed Monument, also known as the Martyr's Memorial, stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance in Baghdad. Designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk, the monument commemorates the soldiers who died during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) and has since become a memorial for all Iraqi martyrs.Constructed between 1981 and 1983, the monument features a striking split turquoise dome, 40 meters in height, evoking the domes of the Abbasid era. The two halves of the dome are offset, with an eternal flame burning in the center, symbolizing life and sacrifice. The structure sits on a circular platform, 190 meters in diameter, located in the middle of an artificial lake, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere.Beneath the monument lies a two-story underground museum, housing exhibition halls, a library, and a lecture hall, providing visitors with historical context and insights into the Iran-Iraq War and its impact on Iraqi society. The surrounding area includes parks, playgrounds, walkways, and bridges, offering a peaceful space for locals and tourists alike. Visiting the monument during the cooler months (October to April) is recommended to fully appreciate the outdoor spaces.
