Discover more about Jalil Khayat Mosque

The Jalil Khayat Mosque, located in Erbil, stands as a testament to modern Islamic architectural grandeur. Completed in 2007 by the sons of Jalil Khayat in memory of their father, the mosque is a prominent landmark and a major center for Islamic worship and community events. The mosque's design is inspired by a blend of Ottoman and Abbasid architectural styles, reminiscent of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in Cairo and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Its most striking features include a large central dome, two towering minarets reaching 65 meters, and intricate Islamic calligraphy adorning the interior. The main dome soars to a height of 48 meters with a 20-meter diameter, complemented by four half domes and twelve quarter domes. Inside, visitors are greeted by elaborate carpets, stunning chandeliers, and a beautifully crafted mihrab and minbar. The mosque can accommodate between 1,500 and 2,000 worshippers within its 15,000 square meters. Visitors are welcome to explore the mosque, but should dress modestly, covering arms and legs. Women are often expected to cover their hair. Shoes must be removed before entering the prayer areas. It's best to avoid visiting during prayer times, especially on Fridays, unless participating in the prayers. Photography is generally allowed, but it's advisable to seek permission before taking pictures of individuals or within the prayer hall. The best time to visit is during the daytime when sunlight enhances the beauty of its architecture, or during the milder seasons of spring and autumn.
