    The Al-Shaheed Monument, also known as the Martyr's Memorial, is a significant landmark in Baghdad, commemorating Iraqi soldiers who died in the Iran-Iraq War. Inaugurated in 1983, the monument was designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk and architect Saman Kamal. It has since become a memorial for all fallen Iraqis in all wars.The monument features a 190-meter diameter circular platform in an artificial lake. The focal point is a 40-meter tall split turquoise dome, resembling domes from the Abbasid era. The split dome shelters an eternal flame. Beneath the monument lies a museum, library, gallery, and lecture hall. The surrounding area includes parks, playgrounds, walkways, and bridges.Built as part of a Ba'athist government program to beautify Baghdad and instill national pride, the monument has become one of the most recognizable in the Middle East. While initially controversial due to its association with Saddam Hussein's regime, it is now seen as a stunning piece of architecture and a place of reflection.
