Al-Sahla Great Mosque: A Beacon of Spirituality

The Al-Sahla Great Mosque, also known as Masjid as-Sahlah, stands as one of the most historically and religiously significant mosques in the Najaf Governorate of Iraq. Located in the eastern part of Najaf, the old city of Kufa, it is approximately 10 kilometers northwest of the Imam Ali Holy Shrine and about 2 kilometers northwest of the Great Mosque of Kufa. This location connects it to the historically rich urban landscape of Kufa, Karbala, and Najaf.Believed to have been established in the first century after Hijra (7th century CE), the mosque has undergone several reconstructions throughout its history, with notable renovations in 1349/1350 CE and more recently between 2011 and 2018. A new courtyard, named "The Sahn of Sayyidah Nargis", was opened in July 2013. The mosque covers an area of 17,500 square meters and is characterized by its rectangular shape, measuring 140 meters in length and 125 meters in width. The walls, standing 22 meters tall, are fortified with semicircular towers, and a 30-meter-high minaret rises from the middle of the eastern side, adjacent to the main gate.Al-Sahla Mosque holds immense importance for Twelver Shia Muslims. It is believed to be the future residence of the twelfth Shia Imam, Hujjat-Allah al-Mahdi, upon his return. The mosque is also associated with several prophets, including Ibrahim (Abraham), Idris (Enoch), and Khidr, and it is said that every prophet has prayed within its walls. According to Shia beliefs, performing two Rakats of prayer in this mosque grants safety and protection for an entire year. It is also believed that the trumpet announcing the Day of Judgement will be blown from here, and seventy thousand people will be resurrected at the mosque to enter Heaven without questioning.The mosque houses several shrines dedicated to prophets and Imams, including Imam Ja'afar Bin Mohammad As-Sadiq, Prophet Abraham, Prophet Edris, Prophet Al-Kidher, Prophet As-saleheen, and Imam Zain Al-Abedeen and Ali Bin Al-Hussein. These shrines add to the spiritual significance of the mosque, making it a focal point for pilgrims and visitors.
