Discover more about Unknown Soldier Monument

The Monument to the Unknown Soldier, located in the heart of Baghdad, stands as a powerful symbol of sacrifice and national pride. Commissioned in 1979 and completed in 1982, it commemorates the martyrs of the Iran-Iraq War. The monument is part of a broader effort to instill a sense of national identity and honor the fallen. The design, a collaboration between Italian architect Marcello D'Olivo and Iraqi sculptor Khaled al-Rahal, features a traditional shield (dira'a) dropping from the grasp of a dying Iraqi warrior. Beneath the shield is a cube with seven layers of metal, representing the seven levels of Jannah (Islamic heaven), with red acrylic sheets symbolizing the blood of the soldiers. The shield has a diameter of 42 meters and is inclined at 12 degrees.A spiral tower, reminiscent of the Samarra minaret, stands beside the dome, clad in copper with a soffit of steel and copper pyramidal modules. The monument also includes an underground museum, accessible via a shaft with windows that allow light to filter in. Visitors can view the cube above through these openings. While Iraqi soldiers once guarded the monument, the current security situation is uncertain. Restoration efforts have been discussed since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, but progress has been slow due to ongoing challenges. The monument remains a significant landmark in the Middle East, reminding people of the sacrifices made for their country.
