Discover more about Grand Festivities Square

Grand Festivities Square, also known as Great Celebrations Square ( ساحة الاحتفالات الكبرى Sahat al-Ahtifalat al-Kubra), is Baghdad's main public square, designed for large celebrations and national events. Constructed in 1986 by order of then-president Saddam Hussein, it was intended to commemorate Iraq's victory in the Iran-Iraq War. The location was specifically chosen for its symbolic value, believed to be the site where Muslim Arabs defeated the Persians in 636 CE. The square features a large parade ground, a reviewing pavilion, and a reflecting pool. Adding to the festive atmosphere, refreshment booths once sold treats during military parades. Saddam Hussein commissioned three major public artworks for the area as memorials to Iraq's fallen soldiers and symbols of Iraq's victory. These include the Victory Arches, also known as the Swords of Qādisīyah, which mark the entrances to the square, and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier located nearby. After being closed for 20 years, the Grand Festivals Square was reopened in June 2023. The restoration aimed to revive Baghdad's cultural role, with the rehabilitation of Al-Mansour Cinema, Al-Mansour Theater, and the Fine Art Hall. The square has become a place for public demonstrations and protests and is intended to be a central hosting spot for festivals and artistic activities. Visiting the square offers a unique perspective on Baghdad, allowing visitors to appreciate its rich history and experience the warmth and resilience of the Iraqi people.
