Kirkuk Citadel: A Timeless Landmark

Kirkuk Citadel, rising 40 meters above the surrounding landscape, is more than just a historical site; it's a living testament to Kirkuk's layered past. Believed to have been initially constructed between 884 and 858 B.C. by King Ashurnasirpal II, the citadel has been a melting pot of cultures and religions throughout its existence.Over the centuries, the Citadel has been influenced by various empires and communities, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Ottomans. It once housed a Jewish temple, which was later transformed into a Christian church and finally a Muslim mosque, symbolizing the unique interfaith harmony that once characterized Kirkuk. The Citadel is also believed to be the final resting place of the biblical prophet Daniel.Within the Citadel's walls, visitors can explore historical structures like the Great Mosque, dating back to the 13th century, the Green Dome, and the Al-Qaysariyah Market.
