Dair Mar Elia, also known as the Monastery of St. Elijah, holds a significant place in Iraq's Christian history. Established around 595 AD by Mar Elia, a monk who had studied in al-Hirah and Mount Izla, it became a vital center for the Church of the East. For centuries, the monastery served as a spiritual hub, drawing thousands of Christians annually for the Mar Elia Holiday in late November. Throughout its history, Dair Mar Elia faced numerous challenges. It was damaged in 1743 by Nader Shah of Persia, who massacred the monks for refusing to convert to Islam. Despite periods of abandonment, the monastery was partially restored in the 20th century and served as a refuge during World War I. In the 1970s, it was repurposed as a base for the Iraqi Republican Guard. Ironically, in the early 2000s, U.S. troops stationed nearby also took an interest in the site, with army engineers even drawing up plans of the monastery. Tragically, in 2014, ISIS completely destroyed Dair Mar Elia, reducing it to rubble. This act was part of a systematic effort to erase Christian history in the region. Despite its destruction, the monastery remains a symbol of faith and resilience for the Christian community and a reminder of Iraq's diverse cultural heritage.
