Achill-henge: A Modern Irish Enigma

Discover Achill-henge: A modern-day enigma on Achill Island offering stunning views and a unique photo opportunity amidst Ireland's rugged landscape.

3.6

Achill-henge, situated in Keel East on Achill Island, County Mayo, is a modern monument that draws curious visitors with its resemblance to the famous Stonehenge. Constructed in November 2011 by property developer Joe McNamara, the henge stands over 4 meters (13 ft) high and has a circumference of 100 meters (330 ft), consisting of 30 concrete columns topped with a ring of stone. McNamara's construction of Achill-henge was not without controversy. Built without planning permission, Mayo County Council sought its removal, but McNamara argued it was an 'ornamental garden'. Despite objections and legal disputes, the henge remains standing, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can walk around and within the henge, contemplating its purpose and the motivations of its creator. The site provides a serene environment to connect with nature, take photographs, and enjoy the unspoiled beauty of Achill's west coast. While not officially recognized as a tourist attraction, Achill-henge has had an impact on local tourism, drawing visitors to explore the island's dramatic cliffs, beaches, and mountains.
