Driving

From Achill Sound, follow the R319 north towards Dugort. Continue through Dugort, and Golden Strand is approximately 3 km east of the village. There is a car park available at the beach.

Public Transport

Take Bus Éireann route 450 from Westport to Achill. Alight at Dugort and walk approximately 3 km east to Golden Strand. Check the Bus Éireann website for current schedules. A taxi from Dugort to Golden Strand would cost approximately €10-€15.

Walking

From Dugort village, follow the road east for approximately 3 km to reach Golden Strand. The walk offers scenic views of the coastline and surrounding landscape.

Overview

Golden Strand, or Barnyagappul Strand, is located approximately 3km east of Dugort village on Achill Island. The name 'Barnyagappul Strand' comes from the Gaelic 'Trá Bhearna na gCapall', meaning 'the strand of the gap of the horses,' a reference to times when horses carried seaweed from the shore to fertilize local fields.The beach is known for its sandy shore and views over Blacksod Bay. The upper part of the beach has large pebbles, with sand dunes behind hosting different plant species. Golden Strand is part of the Atlantic Drive, a scenic route exploring Achill Island.Achill Island offers a variety of activities and attractions, including other beaches like Keem Bay and Keel Beach, Minaun Heights, the Deserted Village at Slievemore, and the Achill Experience Aquarium.
