Discover more about Achill Secret Garden

Achill Secret Garden is a hidden gem on Achill Island, along the Wild Atlantic Way in County Mayo. This three-acre garden, the most westerly public garden in Ireland, offers a tranquil escape with a blend of cultivated beauty and rugged coastal charm. Established around 1870 as part of Bleanáskill Lodge, the garden has been shaped over decades by various owners. Dutch artist Willem van Goor and his wife Doutsje Nauta, who purchased the property in 1995, have spent over 25 years cultivating the gardens, opening them to the public during the summer season. The garden showcases a diverse collection of plants, including mature trees, colorful borders, and unique art features. Sheltered by Monterey pines planted in 1899, the garden features specimen trees from Mexico, Chile, and Tasmania. Seaweed harvested from the shore enriches the soil, and fenced areas create distinct outdoor rooms. Visitors can wander along winding paths, relax in quiet nooks, and enjoy the sounds of nature. The garden provides a picturesque location for photography and a peaceful environment for relaxation and contemplation. Keep an eye out for local bird species that frequent the area.
