    Discover more about Newtown Castle

Newtown Castle, a distinctive 16th-century tower house, is located near Ballyvaughan in the Burren region of County Clare. Originally built for a branch of the O'Brien clan around 1550, it later came into the possession of the powerful O'Loghlen family. Peter O'Loghlen, known as the "Prince of the Burren," was the last recorded occupant in the late 1800s. The castle's unique architecture sets it apart, featuring a cylindrical tower rising from a square pyramidal base. This unusual design has led some to compare it to a rocket ship. The castle's walls, twelve feet thick on the ground floor, provided cool storage for food. The structure includes defensive features like narrow slit windows, gun loops, and murder holes. A spiral staircase connects the five levels. The main hall on the third floor offers panoramic views of the Burren landscape and Galway Bay. After falling into disrepair, Newtown Castle was restored in 1993-94 and now serves as an exhibition center for the Burren College of Art. The castle hosts weddings, conferences, receptions, and other events. Visitors can explore the castle's interior, view art installations, and learn about its history. The castle is open to the public on weekdays and admission is free.
