Discover more about Synge’s Chair

Synge's Chair, known in Irish as Cathaoir Synge, is more than just a scenic overlook; it's a pilgrimage site for lovers of Irish literature. Located on the western edge of Inis Meáin (Inishmaan), the middle of the three Aran Islands, this stone enclosure sits dramatically on a sheer limestone cliff. The structure itself is a simple, low-walled shelter, providing a place to sit and contemplate the vast Atlantic. Between 1898 and 1902, John Millington Synge, a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival and co-founder of Dublin's Abbey Theatre, spent his summers on Inis Meáin. Immersed in the island's unique culture and the Irish language, he drew inspiration from the local stories and landscapes. Synge's Chair became his favorite writing spot, a place where he could escape and connect with the raw beauty of the island. He described it as “a place where I can sit for hours without hearing anything but the sea-gulls' cry”. Today, visitors can follow in Synge's footsteps, experiencing the same tranquility and inspiration that he found. The chair offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby island of Inis Mór. Many leave notes or flowers as a tribute to Synge's literary legacy.
