Discover more about Dún Chonchúir

Dún Chonchúir, also known as Dún Conor, is an impressive oval-shaped stone fort situated on the highest point of Inishmaan (Inis Meáin), the middle of the three Aran Islands. This ancient monument, dating back to the early medieval period (1st to 7th centuries AD), stands as a testament to Ireland's rich cultural heritage. The fort features a sophisticated design with a massive inner wall, in sections over 8m wide, enclosing an area of approximately 70m by 40m. An outer wall runs concentrically around all but the western side, which is protected by a rock-cut ditch. It is estimated that over 14,000 tons of stone were used to construct the inner wall alone. The site has been restored in recent years. Visitors can explore the ruins, imagine the lives of those who once inhabited the fort, and enjoy panoramic views of Inishmaan's limestone valleys, stone walls and the Atlantic Ocean. The strategic location and impressive size of Dún Chonchúir suggest its significance in prehistoric times. While its exact origins and purpose remain shrouded in mystery, some believe it served as a defensive structure, a ceremonial site, or the residence of a local chieftain. Nearby attractions include the cottage where writer JM Synge stayed (Teach Synge), other ancient forts like Dún Fearbhaí, and various natural and cultural landmarks across Inishmaan.
