    Discover more about Dún Eochla

Perched atop the highest point of Inis Mór, Dún Eochla stands as a captivating reminder of Ireland's early medieval period. This stone ring fort, likely constructed around 700 AD, offers breathtaking views of the island, the Atlantic Ocean, and the distant Connemara coast.Historically, Dún Eochla served as the residence and defensive structure for a prosperous local chieftain, or taoiseach. Its location was strategically chosen, situated between the northern fields used for summer grazing and the cliffs where livestock sheltered during winter. The massive double-walled construction, with an inner wall reaching 5 meters in height and 3.5 meters in thickness, served to intimidate rivals and protect the community.Restored in the late 19th century, Dún Eochla retains much of its original character, offering visitors a tangible connection to the past.
