Discover more about Plassey Shipwreck

The Plassey Shipwreck is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Inis Oírr (Inisheer), the smallest and easternmost of the Aran Islands in Galway Bay. The wreck is the remains of the MV Plassey, a 600-tonne cargo vessel that ran aground on Finnis Rock during a fierce storm on March 8, 1960. Originally built in 1940 as a naval trawler and later converted to a cargo ship, the Plassey was carrying a varied cargo, including yarn, stained glass, and even whiskey, when it met its fate. A young islander spotted the stricken vessel, and the Inisheer Rocket Group bravely rescued all eleven crew members using a breeches buoy. The rescued sailors were welcomed by the islanders with warm clothes, whiskey and shelter. A few weeks later, another storm washed the ship off the rocks and deposited it on the rocky shore, where it remains today. Over the years, the harsh Atlantic weather has taken its toll, leaving a heavily deteriorated, rust-colored hulk. The wreck is easily accessible by foot or bicycle from the pier, offering stunning views of the ocean, the Inis Oírr lighthouse, and the Cliffs of Moher in the distance. The Plassey Shipwreck gained further fame when it appeared in the opening credits of the popular Irish comedy series "Father Ted," becoming a cult icon. Today, it stands as a testament to the power of the sea and the enduring spirit of the Inis Oírr community, drawing photographers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking a unique experience.
