Getting There

  • Walking

    From the center of Athlone, start at the Athlone Castle on the banks of the River Shannon. Head east along the River Shannon until you reach the bridge at the end of the castle grounds. Cross the bridge and continue straight onto the main road. Follow the road for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the roundabout. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto the N61 road towards Roscommon. Walk along this road for about 1 kilometer. You will see a sign for 'Meehan' on your right. Turn onto this road and continue straight. After approximately 500 meters, you will find the Commemorative Cross on your left.

    From Athlone Town, head to the nearest bus stop on Church Street. Take Bus Route 23 towards Ballinasloe. Ask the driver to notify you when approaching the Meehan stop. After about 15 minutes of travel, you will reach the Meehan stop. From the bus stop, walk back along the road you just came from for about 300 meters, and you will see the Commemorative Cross on your right.
