Discover more about Franciscan Abbey & Graveyard

The Franciscan Abbey and Graveyard in Athlone offers a captivating glimpse into Ireland's rich ecclesiastical past. The site, located on Coosan Road, dates back to the 13th century, with the Franciscans establishing a presence in Athlone around 1235. While there's no definitive proof of the original friary's location, tradition suggests it was on Northgate Street. Visitors can explore the remnants of the abbey's structure, showcasing stonework and architectural details. The graveyard surrounding the abbey holds centuries of stories, with weathered headstones and tombs. The atmosphere is tranquil, offering a space for reflection and connection with Ireland's spiritual and cultural heritage. The grounds, with lush greenery, enhance the peaceful environment. The friary church, though in ruins since the 19th century, is thought to have been built around 1690. However, war interrupted its completion in the 1690s. Despite its unfinished state, the graveyard served as Athlone's main burial ground until the 1870s. There is evidence suggesting the graveyard may have been an early Christian site, attracting the Franciscans in the 17th century. Today, the inscriptions on the headstones mainly date back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
