Built in the late 15th or early 16th century by the Lynch family, it served as both a residence and a defensive stronghold. The Lynches, of Anglo-Norman descent, were a prominent and influential family in Galway, playing a significant role in the city's development and governance.The castle's architecture is a fine example of late Gothic style, featuring a four-story limestone facade adorned with embellished carved windows, gargoyles, ornamental mouldings, and cornices. The facade also displays the Lynch family coat of arms, along with the arms of King Henry VII and the Fitzgeralds of Kildare, reflecting the family's wealth, status, and alliances. Religious symbols, including a carving of the Crucifixion and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, further embellish the exterior.Over the centuries, Lynch's Castle has witnessed many significant events in Galway's history. In 1808, the castle was extended, and in 1933, Allied Irish Bank (AIB) acquired the site, restoring it and adding the carved doorway we see today.
