Once a 14th-century fort guarding a river crossing, the estate was granted to the Cooper family in the 17th century. The family transformed it into a grand manor, and later, in the early 19th century, commissioned renowned architect Francis Johnston to remodel and expand it into the castellated mansion seen today.Throughout its history, Markree Castle has been influenced by notable figures. Edward Joshua Cooper, a keen astronomer, established an observatory on the grounds in 1834, which housed the world's first cast-iron telescope. In 1848, the observatory staff discovered the asteroid Metis, a significant scientific achievement. The castle also welcomed distinguished visitors such as poet W.B. Yeats and Mrs. Cecil Alexander, who was inspired to write the hymn 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' while admiring the view from the terrace.Today, Markree Castle operates as a luxurious hotel, offering guests a chance to experience the grandeur of Irish castle life.
