Merlin Castle: A Glimpse into Galway's Medieval Past

Merlin Castle, situated in Merlin Park Woods, stands as a testament to Galway's rich medieval history. Originally known as Doughiska Castle, the three-story tower house dates back to the 15th or 16th century. The site itself has even earlier roots, with evidence suggesting it was once the location of a fortification built for Turlough O'Connor, the High King of Ireland, in the 12th century.The castle's history is intertwined with prominent Galway families. In the 16th century, it came into the possession of the Lynch family. However, the Lynches were evicted in the mid-17th century by Cromwellian Commissioners, during which time the castle is believed to have lost its roof. Later, in 1731, Francis Blake became the first of his family to reside in the castle, renaming the estate Merlin Park after his wife's maiden name. The castle remained inhabited until 1812 when Charles Blake built a new mansion on the estate.Today, Merlin Castle stands as a ruin within the scenic Merlin Park Woods, offering visitors a chance to explore a piece of Galway's medieval past. The castle was restored by the Galway City Council in 2021. Architectural details, such as the ogee windows adorned with carvings and the machicolations at roof level, offer insights into the castle's design and defensive features. Keep an eye out for the Sheela-na-gig carving on the second floor.
