The Killala Round Tower is one of five such towers in County Mayo, a magnificent relic of medieval Christian Ireland. Standing at almost 26 meters (84 feet) tall, it is built upon a 1-meter high plinth. The entrance, accessible by ladder, is about 3 meters above ground level. The tower is constructed from large limestone blocks, with light brown sandstone framing the doorway. A noticeable bulge about halfway up the tower is said to be the result of lightning damage in the 18th century.Believed to have been constructed between 1170 and 1238, the tower sits on the site of an original 5th-century monastic settlement founded by St. Patrick, who appointed St. Muiredach as the first Bishop of Killala. Some locals believe a souterrain (underground structure) in the grounds of the church across the road connects to the tower. The tower likely served as a belfry and a place of refuge.Killala itself is a picturesque seaside village with a rich history. It is known for its role in the 1798 rebellion when General Humbert arrived from France to join the Irish forces. The town offers a wealth of historical monuments and buildings, including St. Patrick's Cathedral, one of Ireland's smallest and oldest cathedrals.
