Discover more about Brownshill Portal Tomb (Dolmen)

The Brownshill Dolmen, also known as Kernanstown Cromlech, is a remarkable example of a megalithic portal tomb, situated just 3km east of Carlow town. Dating back approximately 5,000 years, to between 3300 and 3290 BC, this ancient monument stands as a testament to the ingenuity and engineering capabilities of Ireland's early Neolithic inhabitants. The dolmen's most awe-inspiring feature is its massive granite capstone, which measures approximately 4.7m x 6.1m x 2m and weighs over 100 tonnes. Reputedly the largest capstone in Europe, it rests upon two portal stones, a door stone, and a low boulder, creating a chamber beneath. The entrance, which faces east, would once have been sealed with smaller stones. While the exact purpose of the Brownshill Dolmen remains a mystery, it is believed to have been a ceremonial site used for religious rites, possibly including human cremation or burial. Some theories suggest it may have also served as a territorial marker. Although the site has never been excavated, findings from similar tombs across Ireland have revealed pottery, flint tools, personal items, and human remains, suggesting complex burial practices. Today, the Brownshill Dolmen is a popular attraction, drawing visitors interested in history, archaeology, and the mysteries of ancient Ireland. The site is easily accessible via a dedicated car park and a short walk along a tarmac path, making it suitable for wheelchair users.
