Giants Leap Wedge Tomb: A Glimpse into Ireland's Ancient Past

Giants Leap Wedge Tomb, also known as the Giant's Grave, is located within the Cavan Burren Park, a prehistoric landscape in County Cavan. This impressive megalithic monument dates back to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, approximately 4,000 years ago. Wedge tombs are the most numerous type of megalithic tomb in Ireland, characterized by their trapezoidal chamber which decreases in height and width from front to back, creating a wedge shape. The Giants Leap Wedge Tomb features a gallery over 7 meters long, divided by a septal slab into a portico and a main chamber. The gallery is covered by several roof stones, and the entrance faces west-southwest. The tomb's name is derived from local folklore, telling the tale of two giants, Lugh and Lag, who competed for the affection of a female giant. Lag tragically fell to his death in a nearby chasm, known as the Giant's Leap, and was said to be buried in the tomb. Visitors to the Giants Leap Wedge Tomb can explore the surrounding Cavan Burren Park, which features over 10km of walking trails, a visitor center, and a wealth of archaeological and geological features. The park showcases a unique limestone plateau formed millions of years ago, with glacial erratics and Neolithic structures dotting the landscape.
