Founded around 1189, possibly by Donal 'the Great' O'Brien, King of Thomond, it was originally named the 'Abbey of St. Peter & Paul at Kilmony'. The abbey quickly rose to prominence as the largest and most influential Augustinian monastery in the region.Throughout its history, Clare Abbey witnessed both prosperity and conflict. In 1278, it was the site of a bloody ambush during a civil war between factions of the O'Brien family. Despite these turbulent times, the abbey continued to be an important religious center, with evidence suggesting the monks enjoyed a rich diet and imported goods from France and Bristol.Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins, including the church with its belfry tower, and the remains of domestic buildings arranged around a cloister garth.
