Built in 1467 by Sean MacNamara, the castle served as a stronghold for the powerful MacNamara clan for centuries. The name 'Knappogue' comes from the Irish 'Caisleán na Cnapóige,' meaning 'Castle of the Little Hill'.Over the years, Knappogue Castle has witnessed numerous historical events and changed hands several times. Briefly confiscated during the Cromwellian period in the 17th century, it was later returned to the MacNamara family. In the 19th century, the Scott and Dunboyne families undertook major restoration work, adding features like the walled garden. In the 20th century, American Mark Edwin Andrews purchased the castle and, in collaboration with Shannon Development, restored it to its former glory.Today, Knappogue Castle is a popular tourist attraction, offering guided tours, medieval banquets, and even overnight stays. The castle's walled garden, restored in Victorian style, is a tranquil oasis with climbing roses, grapevines, and fig trees. The medieval banquets, held from April to October, provide a memorable evening of traditional music, song, dance, and food. Visitors can also explore the castle's interior, including the Dalcassian Hall, and learn about its rich history from the Earl's Butler. Knappogue Castle is also known for its premium single malt Irish whiskey, adding another layer to its appeal.
