Spectacle Bridge, gracefully arching over the Aille River in County Clare, is more than just a crossing; it's a journey back in time. Constructed in May 1816, this single-arch stone bridge is renowned for its distinctive design. County engineer John Hill designed the bridge with a large cylindrical tunnel running through the center to reduce the weight of the structure, which gives the bridge its unique 'spectacle' appearance.Spanning a gorge up to 25 meters deep, the Spectacle Bridge connects Lisdoonvarna and Ennistymon on the N67 road. The bridge is made of cut stone with coping and voussoirs, along with splayed piers. The bridge was renovated in 2001.Today, the Spectacle Bridge invites visitors to appreciate its architectural ingenuity and the surrounding natural beauty. The area provides a tranquil escape, perfect for leisurely strolls and quiet reflection. The bridge is an excellent spot for photography, especially when the light enhances the stone and landscape. Walking trails around the bridge allow exploration of County Clare's vistas.
